The NCAA annually awards its CHOICES alcohol education grants to a select group of member institutions and conferences. The program provides funding to integrate athletics into campus-wide efforts aimed at encouraging students to make healthy choices in their daily lives. A two-time award recipient, SUNY Cortland recently worked with the CACTC to expand the CHOICES program into local high schools. Over the course of the multi-year grant, SUNY Cortland student-athletes have visited classrooms in Cortland, Onondaga and Tompkins counties to discuss how everyday healthy decisions are critical to an active and rewarding lifestyle.“Your presentation was just long enough to get to the heart of the topic and short enough to keep (the students’) attention, “ remarked Ralph Boettger, the director of health, physical education and athletics at Dryden Central School. “This is a very tough balancing act. Our athletes need to hear the messages about how to live their lives from people who have been there, are there, but are also near their age. (Dan Pitcher) did a wonderful job talking to the students, not down to them. “
