Cortland Area Communities that Care Coalition is invested in the youth of Cortland County and wants to help them make positive changes in their lives that promote healthy living. The CACTC Youth Summit will do just that. Set in a professional development format this year, the summit will be held in conjunction with SUNY Cortland Athletics, the National Guard and area agencies, at the Parks Center Building located on the Cortland State campus on March 27. The CACTC Youth Summit strives to bring Cortland County youth education about topics relevant to their lives. With keynote speaker John Underwood, President and founder of The American Athletics Institute, this year’s summit is certain to give our youth something to think and talk about. The Institute’s main focus is to educate youth on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Presenters are substance abuse professionals who were once world class athletes and they will discuss how such substance abuse impacts performance. The combination of experience, together with scientific research makes The American Athletic Institute unique in the prevention/education field. Counselors at the institute have said, “We understand athletes, the dangers of drugs and the volatile mix the two present when combined.” Their mission is “To present the most pertinent prevention/intervention information to selected audiences in a manner that will effect positive change. To achieve this objective, the staff at the American Athletic Institute is dedicated to creating and providing quality educational-training programs that address the ever changing; needs of people and norms of society, both in and out of sport.” In addition to the keynote speaker, there will be a number of workshops and activities Youth Summit attendees will participate in.
