The East End Community Center is alive and well even though the doors to the center’s previous home at 46 Elm Street closed this past May due to a funding shortage. The Center is now housed at a City-owned facility on Wheeler Ave, the former NYS Armory. At this facility, the Center will continue fall programs such as the “Introduction to Computers” class, the popular History and Heritage series and the Community Walking Program. There will also be several new programs to be announced in upcoming months. Current activities include the collection of recipes from community residents for the second edition of the East End Center’s cookbook called “A Taste of Tradition II.” To submit a recipe, go to www.eastendcenter.org and download the recipe collection form. The recipe can then be faxed to (607) 753-3023 or emailed to

or dropped off at the Youth Bureau, 35 Port Watson St in Cortland. If there is a story behind the recipe or an historical photo to accompany the recipe, the Center will be happy to include these. But, please hurry! All recipes must be submitted by Monday, August 16 for inclusion in the next cookbook. Show your support for the East End Community Center by attending the Center’s annual fundraiser at the Ramada Inn on Saturday, July 31 from 7-11pm. The evening features the ultimate tribute band, Steve Southworth and the Rockabilly Rays, playing all your favorites of the 50’s and 60’s. There will also be a hula-hoop contest, a dance contest, door prizes and, if you can find that poodle skirt or those blue sued shoes, you might want to enter the contest for “Best 50’s attire.” Tickets are available at a reduced rate in advance of the event at Jodi’s Hallmark, Sheridan’s Jewelry, Cortland Hardware, the Cortland Youth Bureau and the Ramada Inn. Tickets will also be available at the door. Also, be watching for the historical display sponsored by the East End Community Center and the Cortland County Historical Society during the three weeks of the Jets camp (Aug 2 to Aug 23). The display is titled “One Hundred Years of Sports in Cortland County” and features rare photos and artifacts from around Cortland County depicting the sports history of the community. The show will run from 12:00 noon to 6:00pm at 15 Main Street in beautiful downtown Cortland. There is no admission to view the display but donations are gladly accepted to benefit the Historical Society and the East End Center. Now in its 6th year, the East End Community Center continues to strive to make Cortland a safer better place to live by increasing neighborhood attachment and community organization through free programs and services that reach out to all residents. The Center is a proud member of the Cortland Area Communities that Care Coalition.
