Strengthening Families Program             Seven Valleys Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. is pleased to offer the Strengthening Families Program in partnership with Cortland Area Communities That Care Coalition.  Strengthening Families helps families ease the transition when youngsters move from elementary school to junior high school after sixth grade.             This program is designed to help both parents and (pre)teens as they navigate through the teen years.  The goal is to develop skills in the area of communication and to explore the strategies needed to avoid some of the problems that adults and their children may encounter.            A six week program is scheduled for this fall and is being offered to Homer School District residents. The sessions  will be held at the Homer Intermediate School beginning Wednesday September 22nd.  Strengthening Families is free and open to families of 10-14 year olds. It will give families and their (pre)teen the opportunity to practice and reinforce the skills needed to help them successfully navigate through this exciting but potentially challenging time.               Parents and youth will learn a variety of ways to interact.  The list includes, but is not limited to: ·     Supporting youth by understanding potential problems  ·     Balancing love and limits·      Making ground rules  ·      Discussing goals (Parent/youth discussion)·      Understanding what youth this age are like ·      Making specific house rules·      Understanding parental stress ·      Identifying strengths of family members ·      Building a positive relationship             Dinner for the entire family and child-care for younger siblings are offered free of charge at each of the free six-week sessions.
